Related to today’s Navy Review: The owner of a jewelry store in Cape Cod, NJ, registered “Forged by the Sea” as the trademark of her own line and the U.S. Navy lawyers contacted her to buy the registration from her and then issue a license to use the name at no charge. The Navy’s tag line, “Forged by the Sea”, has no problem in being registered as well, since it’s a different class than jewelry but being such a massive organization, they want to own the trademark in as many classes as possible, including jewelry. After some negotiation, the jeweler didn’t concede and now she’s unclear as to what will happen next; the only sure thing being that she has no case in stopping the Navy from using the tagline.
