A Hans Haacke banner hangs on the outside of the EMST—National Museum of Contemporary Art. It’s titled Wir (alle) sind das Volk—We (all) are the people, 2003/17.

Documenta 14 opens to press and professionals today in its longtime home of Kassel, Germany, but the quinquennial affair got underway in earnest two months ago, on April 8, when it opened in Athens, Greece. The show there is a sprawling and unruly, by turns maddening and enlightening. A few big names—Stanley Whitney, Vija Celmins, R.H. Quaytman—share the stage with many who will not be as well known to most visitors. A full review of Documenta, encompassing both Athens and Kassel, will follow later. For now, here is a look around the show with a bit of commentary.
